How this calculator works — the formula
roof area = footprint × pitch multiplier (6/12 → ×1.118, 8/12 → ×1.202, 12/12 → ×1.414)
bundles = ⌈squares × (1 + waste%) × 3⌉
price = (shingles + underlayment + labor + tear-off) × (1 + overhead%) ÷ (1 − margin%)
Pitch multiplier is √(1 + (rise/12)²) — the geometry of the slope. Waste runs 10% on clean gables and 15%+ on hips, valleys, and dormers. Three bundles per square is standard for architectural shingles.

What does roofing labor cost per square?
Install crews typically run $125–$250 per square depending on market, pitch, and story count; tear-off adds $40–$75 per square per layer. Steep-slope premiums are real — walking an 8/12 is not walking a 4/12.
What margin should a roofing quote carry?
